Before we launched from the Wahweap marina for that awesome time sailing and exploring Lake Powell, I had noticed the inside tread on our boat trailer tires were worn considerably. The tires themselves were only about 2 years old, but the inside was nearly bald. We had already pulled this thing across the country once, to and from our house in Carlsbad, all the way here from Carlsbad with no problems up to this point. Needless to say I was shocked, frustrated, and a bit pissed! I mention the tire problem to the crew who at the time was already preparing for the voyage detailed in the last post. Since preparations were already being made and there wasn’t much we could have done about it now or was it really a big deal since we were already at the lake, we decided to figure it out when we got back.
Well it turned out that a bent axle was causing the tires to “toe in.” Without getting into too much detail we had to get it replaced since apparently torsion axles can’t be straightened. Word of advice…stick with good old leaf spring axles. I put in a call to the dealer in Florida only to discover it was going to be 3 weeks for another one to even be produced and then another week for it to be shipped to our shop in Page, AZ! Shit! I tried to calm myself by saying, “well at least we are in Lake Powell.” And that was true. Not a bad place to be stuck.
However, I could not believe there wasn’t a faster way to get a new axle and wasn’t going to stop with just one phone call. So I emailed the owners of Tattoo Yachts who even though were on their boat on vacation in the Bahamas responded to my email and pretty sure pulled some strings to get us one sooner. That cut our wait time down to 2 weeks which defiantly boosted morale and we started searching for cool places to check out.
In the next month or so we will be making some modifications to the trailer and rig. This trailer story could fit into an entire book so I will not bore anyone reading this with the details…nor do I want to relive them for my own sanity. But real quick…we added a 2nd axle, 4 new tires, and shortened the tow hitch….not all at once, but again I don’t want to bore anyone! If you want details please send us a message.
